THAILAND
Thailand stretches from the Malay Peninsula to the mountains of the Chinese border. It is bounded by the South China Sea, Malaysia, Burma, Cambodia, Laos and Yunnan. It is a country of great cultural and geographic contrasts. The long and fascinating history can be seen in its ancient spectacular temples and golden palaces. Even though ancient Siam has become a modern Thailand, the religious and cultural rituals are still very strong at every level, from the family through to high finance. In the smallest village or in busy Bangkok saffron-robed monks can be seen, especially in the early morning when they go out to receive food from ordinary people in the street. The Hill Tribes and cool climate of the north are a complete contrast to the bustliing city of Bangkok and the sun drenched beaches of the south. There are also less well known areas such as the north-east along the Mekong river which can easily be combined with a visit to the quiet and undeveloped country of Laos, just across the river. There are many National Parks in both the north and south with spectacular scenery, lush vegetation and bird and wildlife. Activities such as trekking, sea kayaking, snorkelling or diving can be arranged. There is one of the world's great train journeys from Chiang Mai down through the length of Thailand, the Malay Peninsula and into Singapore. We can arrange this either by ordinary train or the super luxury Eastern Orieent Express or by other forms of transport such as sea, air and road. You can stop at any of the places of interest in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore and continue through the Indonesian Archipelago or Borneo.
YUNNAN
Yunnan has more in common with its neighbours Tibet, Burma, Laos and Vietnam than with its Han Chinese administrators. It has been known for centuries for its pleasant stable climate and varied scenery. It is cut through by the gorges of three great rivers; the Mekong, the Yangtze and the Salween, as they descend from the Tibetan plateau to the rainforests of the lowlands. The high mountain ranges rising to 6,700m which separate Yunnan from the rest of China have helped to preserve Yunnan as one of the most unspoilt parts of China. The 25 ethnic groups of the mountains have been able to retain much of their culture including unusual pagoda architecture. The tremendous range of scenery from snow clad mountains to fertile valleys and jungle supports a rich plant and bird life. This is one of the principal regions from which the "great plant hunters" of last century obtained many of the plants in cultivation today.
This Dossier concentrates on tours centred on Thailand and Yunnan but if you are interested in neighbouring countries such as Vietnam, Laos , Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia please ask for the relevant Dossiers. Note: we will not be offering tours to Burma while tourism seems to be directly contributing to government repression there. This Dossier describes tailor made services arranged by the most established operator in the region who have offices in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Yunnan. They can provide transport, accommodation, guides and handle all the necessary paperwork for immigration and permits, which is a major advantage in this part of the world. They are a reliable and respected ground operator and also offer a range of standard tours with regular departures based on a minimum of six passengers as well as a wide range of accommodation and excursions from the main cities and beach resorts. Details of these are available on request.
There are any possibilities for culture and nature tours in Thailand and Laos, either tailor made or joining small groups. The destinations offered are generally off the beaten track and therefore offer a chance to see the non-touristy side of Thailand. Other tailor made itineraries can be arranged on request.
Of course any of these services can be combined to suit your requirements. If you let us know how long you can travel for, how many people and any specific interests you have we will arrange a quote for you free of charge and without obligation.
BANGKOK and the Old Capitals
There is no denying that Bangkok is a bustling, crowded and chaotic city but the art, architecture, history, shopping, food and atmosphere certainly make it worth visiting. The Royal Palace with its golden temples and statues is a must to visit, as are some of the smaller but equally beautiful temples and pagodas such as Wat Arun and Wat Po. There are several markets including the fascinating floating markets, the enormous weekend market or the maze of Chinatown. Or perhaps you prefer the air-conditioned department stores in the modern centre of the city. Trying out the transport is half the fun with a ride in a taxi, tuk-tuk (motorised rickshaw), motorbike, longtail boat or watertaxi to challenge you. Or venture out on foot to soak up the atmosphere.
AYUTHAYA
A former capital of Thailand, the ruins indicate that it once must have been a splendid city. There are two museums and many Wats (temples) to be visited. Bang Pa In, the old Royal Summer Residence, has a curious collection of buildings in various architectural styles. This can be reached by boat from Ayutaya. Ayutaya can be a 1 or 2 day trip from Bangkok.
SUKHOTHAI
The first capital of Thailand during the classical period of Thai art and architecture, Sukothai still holds some of the magic of the past. You can wander through ancient temples, past hundreds of Buddha images and amongst the trees and gardens. Sunset here is particularly atmospheric.
KHAO YAI NATIONAL PARK
Khao Yai is approximately 2000 square kilometres of beautiful forest with walking trails. Despite its beauty and proximity to Bangkok it is off the main trail for tourists. Gibbons, elephants and deer may be seen or heard. We can arrange guided walks through the park.
KANCHANABURI
Kanchanburi is set on the Kwai River 130 Km west of Bangkok. It is popular with locals at the weekends and has the feel of a holiday town. Most of the activity is by the river. There are houseboats for hire, excellent restaurants and bars. For those interested in history, the Bridge over the River Kwai still stands here. It is possible to travel along the railway part of the way where parts of the track cling precariously to the cliff wall. There is also the JEATH War Museum that illustrates the hardships for the Allied Prisoners of War that built the Burmese Railway in 1942. On a lighter note, the limestone cascades of Erawan Falls are crystal clear, cool and refreshing. Sai Yoke Waterfall is also very lovely but a bit further afield.
CHIANG MAI
Chiang Mai, Thailand's northern capital, was founded in the 11th century and lies in a lush, fertile valley some 750km north of Bangkok. It's a big rural town and although it has the modern facilities of Bangkok it has a cooler climate and is far less crowded. Chiang Mai was once a walled city and remnants still remain. There are several wats within the old town. Wat Chiang Mai is the oldest, built in 1296 and contains precious Buddha images. The Tribal Research Centre represents each of the Hilltribe groups and the Folk Art Museum and National Museums both have interesting exhibits. For shoppers, Chiang Mai is a real treat with market stalls selling a wide range of clothing, souvenirs and artefacts. Wat Phrathat sits majestically atop Doi Suthep hill with views over the city. Elephant rides can be arranged.
HILLTRIBE TREKKING
There are many areas in which to trek depending on your level of fitness and time available. A typical trek can be from 2-4 days trekking through hilly terrain, visiting local hilltribes and sleeping in their village homes. To appreciate this experience you should be prepared for little privacy and to accept a different lifestyle. Longer and more strenuous treks are rewarded by visiting more remote villages. We can arrange treks in the Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son regions.
CHIANG RAI
Chiang Rai is the capital of Thailand's most northern province and a good base to visit the "Golden Triangle". You can cross the border into Burma from here to briefly visit the market area.
MAE HONG SON
A beautiful highland town which serves as a meeting place for the numerous hilltribe peoples of the area. It lies in a forested valley surrounded by mountains and enjoys cooler climate, down to 2 degrees Celsius in the winter nights. It also makes a good base for an adventure holiday with caving, rafting and trekking.
CHIANG KHAN and The North East
Chiang Khan is a pleasant town of old wooden houses, with a number of unusual temples. It has a long history as stop on the trading route along the Mekong River between China, Laos and Thailand. We can arrange tours into the surrounding rural areas and visit local development agencies who can give us a real insight into this region. We can also arrange visits to historical and cultural sights or birdwatching tours to this little-touristed but fascinating province.
KOH SAMUI and the South East Coast
Koh Samui is the largest of the group of islands in the Gulf of Thailand. It boasts many long white sand beaches, swaying coconut palms and a choice of luxury accommodation or budget bungalows. To avoid the rains May to October is the best time to travel. Koh Phangan, its neighbour, hasn't had the same development and generally offers simpler accommodation. It is still possible to find a guesthouse with a beautiful sandy cove all to itself! Koh Tao is the smallest and most distant of these islands. A quiet retreat with good snorkelling, a rugged interior and not much else to distract you from sheer relaxation.
PHUKET and the South West Coast
The main beaches of Phuket have become rather over-developed and while they still offer long white sand beaches, the atmosphere is of western tourism rather than Thai hospitality. Despite this there a few exclusive and well run resorts that offer beautifully designed Thai Pavilions, all watersports and excellent food. Away from the beaches, Phuket also has a Wildlife Park, waterfalls and forest where you can visit the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. We can also arrange special diving trips to the Similan Islands, one of the worlds premier dive sites.
KRABI
The beaches on the mainland and on Koh Phi Phi live up to the tropical ideal of clear turquoise waters, fine white sand and the added attraction of dramatic limestone karsts that rise sharply out of the water forming caves and grottoes. It is possible to swim, snorkel, dive, take boat trips to deserted islands and generally soak up the sun (the rainy season is November- April). Although this area is becoming more popular we can book a peaceful hideaway for you.
These a just a few ideas of what we can arrange for you. Every itinerary we arrange is unique, based on what your interests are. Services range from basic hilltribe accommodation to luxury hideaway resorts- Just Ask!! As well as tailormade trips we offer small group tours to both northern and southern Thailand.
BANGKOK STOPOVERS
As well as accommodation and transfers we can arrange city tours visiting the Grand Palace, the Floating market, a tour of the smaller canals, cooking classes and 1 or 2 day trips to Ayutthaya or the Kwai River.

Some tips for fast navigation through our pages
We have tried to make this website as simple as possible but if you get lost simply click on MAIN INDEX and you will be returned to this page. We have removed all unnecessary graphics so that the pages are quick to access, read and print from any kind of browser. Pages with images are marked "slow graphics" after their link. Although we have generally cut out fancy graphics we have packed in plenty of information and the indexing system should allow you to access what you want very quickly. The pages start with a PAGE INDEX and a general description and get more detailed if you are interested enough to keep scrolling down.
