INTRODUCTION

PERU and BOLIVIA

Peru encompasses the three main geographical zones of South America: the dry coast, with deserts massive sand dunes and oasis villages, the 6000m peaks of the Andes with its fertile valleys and the vibrant green jungle of the Amazon basin. The spectacular and mysterious remains of many ancient cultures are found all over the country culminating in the famous Inca ruins which were abandoned when the Spanish conquered in the fifteenth century. Many picturesque colonial towns still remain which were built on Inca foundations. The scenery is complemented by the traditional dress of the Indians with their bright weavings, skirts, shawls and many styles of hat which distinguish each regional group. Lake Titicaca (or Titikaka in local spelling) which is a tranquil blue if Cochamama (the goddess of the lake) is happy becomes steely grey if she is not. The legends, landscape, colours and people are entwined into complex cultures, some of which have remained the same for hundreds of years.

Peru and Bolivia share some magnificent geography such as Lake Titicaca, The Andes, the Altiplano and vast areas of Amazonian jungle. There are also links with their histories and cultures. The great Inca empire encompassed this land and much more. Today the two countries have a benevolent relationship and Bolivia's access to the Pacific is through Peru.

DESTINATIONS IN PERU

LIMA AND THE COAST

LIMA

Most visitors to Peru do not consider the capital as a goal in its own right. But Lima once had the reputation for being the most beautiful city of Spanish America. It was known as the 'City of the Kings'. Today it is a rather daunting, shameless sprawl of suburbs and shanty towns; but is well worth appreciating the elegant Colonial areas which exude romantic nostalgia. Barranco for example is full of gorgeous old mansions, one or two have been taken over and restored for museums, private houses or penas. Penas are restaurants or bars where live Creole music is played and danced to. Some of the best can be found here.

THE COAST OF PERU

Along the coast south of Lima, the Atacama is one of the driest deserts in the world with 50 metre sand dunes rising above the towns and oases. We can be sure of good sunny weather. However, due to numerous river valleys which cross from the Andes, we find large cotton plantations which date back to Colonial times (C 17th and C 18th). There are many folk music traditions in this area which are blend of African slave and Spanish Christian influences. It is possible to visit or even spend the night in a colonial Hacienda.

THE PARACAS WILDLIFE RESERVE

Only about a 30 minute boat ride from the oasis of Paracas lies a group of rocky islands known as the Ballestas Islands. For centuries these islands have been visited, historically for the guano which was used as a fertiliser and in buildings but nowadays tourists approach the islands to see the hundreds of sea-lions which sprawl about on the rocks and in sandy coves. They are joined by thousands of birds ranging from Peruvian Boobies to the cute Humbolt Penguin. Our hotel is actually on the Paracas Peninsula where Pelican and Flamingo cover the beaches, when in season.

THE NAZCA LINES

Etched into the desert sand over 2,000 years ago, their exact purpose remains a matter of debate. One mystery is that to appreciate fully their majesty, you need to fly over them, but was this achieved in pre-Colombian times? Making an over-flight today confirms they had a way - could they have done it in their shamanic visions? Come and see for yourself!

CUSCO AND MACHU PICCHU

CUSCO (3320m)

Cusco is one of our favourite towns not only in Peru but perhaps in the whole of the Americas! It is one of those rare places that not only has history built all around it but has a living history in the markets and on the streets. Combine this with comfortable colonial-style, or modern hotels and fabulous restaurants and you can get an idea of what it is like. After exploring the town with its own Inca stonework you can visit one of the many impressive Inca sites such as Sacasayhuman, Kenko or Tambomachay. Cusco is also the centre for weaving and silver jewellery. And of course every Cusquenan can play a musical instrument whether it be the panpipe, flute or churango.

THE SACRED VALLEY

Within the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba River lie several important Inca sites.

Ollyantatambo is a delightful small town which, like Cusco, is built on original Inca walls. The fine Inca ruins which were never fully completed surround the town. You can spend the night in simple but comfortable accommodation or visit on a day trip from Cusco. Ollantaytambo has a station on the train line between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Pisac is another impressive Inca site clinging the hillside above the colonial town in the valley. It has a popular Indian market where you can see people in traditional dress and buy weavings or other local crafts. You can also stay at comfortable accommodation in Pisac although most people prefer to return to Cusco for the night.

Chinchero also offers a colourful Sunday market where you can haggle for local products.

At Salinas there are Inca salt workings which are still in use which are a picturesque sight with the salt pans terraced down the hillside. We can also arrange for you to take short walks in the Sacred Valley to remote Indian villages where people still live in caves. There is also the possibility of some excellent cycling or you can try horse riding in the local tradition.

THE INCA TRAIL

The option to hike along the Inca trail for four days, is an opportunity to immerse oneself in the Andean wilderness. Dramatic vistas of ravines, dense vegetation then up into the swirling clouds and high mountains. The Inca history unravels as you walk. The trail is dotted with Inca ruins and terracing characteristically perched on steep hillsides. There are 3 passes, the highest being 4200m, so a slow and steady pace is called for. Often, in the evenings, as you relax after the days walk, you can enjoy the sunset over the ranges followed by the starry southern skies. If 4 days is out of your endurance range, there is a 2 day walk or even a 1 day walk that passes the wonderful Winay Wanya ruins and enters Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. On a clear morning the whole complex and surrounding mountains are visible.

MACHU PICCHU

This huge and mysterious Inca site sits majestic, surrounded by sharp peaks and forested hills. It is little wonder that it wasn't known about by western people until 1911 when Hiram Bingham was led there by a local guide. Despite the many archaeological studies that have been done, no-one really knows exactly when it was built or why. There are structures that look like sleeping quarters, an agricultural zone as well as the beautifully worked structures which may have been temples and Royal tombs but nobody can be certain. Enormous rocks, some 2m high and 1m wide have been shaped and carved. Some have holes drilled deep into them and trapezoid niches. The trapezoid entrances and sloping walls, characteristic of Inca construction, were to give support in case of earthquakes. There is an aura of mystery at Machu Picchu created by its history, location and construction. It is a must on any visit to Peru.

PUNO AND LAKE TITICACA

PUNO (3855m)

Apart from the 2 main squares and a good market for local textiles Puno does not hold a lot of interest for the tourist. However being on the shores of Lake Titicaca and close to Sillustani it has become popular with tourists. At Sillustani you can see pre-Columbian funeral towers or Chullpas set on a peninsula of Lake Ayumara. And if you time it right you can witness the spectacular festival of the Anniversary of Manco Kapac, the first Inca King, rising out of the lake. Indian tribes from neighbouring villages converge on the shores of the lake in bright traditional dress playing local instruments and dancing. In the meantime there is a dramatic re-enactment of the Manco Kapac and his wife arriving on the shore. It is convenient to cross into Bolivia from here.

LAKE TITICACA (OR TITIKAKA)

At 3800 metres above sea level Lake Titicaca is the highest lake of this size in the world. According to local legend it can be 3 colours; blue, green or grey depending on whether Cochamama, the lake goddess, is happy, normal or angry. On a clear day the colours are rich and the reeds and surrounding hills are reflected in the water. We can visit the nearby Uros Islands where reeds are used for everything from making boats and houses to food. Further afield is Taquile (or Takile) Island with Inca ruins and narrow stone paved lanes. The people here are descendants of the Incas and the local traditions such as weaving are still practised. (See the Bolivia section of this dossier)

AREQUIPA AND THE COLCA CANYON

AREQUIPA (2380 m)

Arequipa stands in a beautiful valley at the foot of El Misti volcano a snow-capped peak which, along with Chachani and Pichu-Pichu, dominate the city. It was an Inca city but was developed by the Spanish and has many lovely colonial buildings such as the Cathedral, La Compania church, and the Santa Catalina Convent. This convent was closed to the outside world for 400 years but is now open for tours of its cobbled streets and flowered cloisters. This and many other buildings were made from white volcanic material which gives the city the title of "The White City". The countryside surrounding Arequipa with its fertile valleys and high mountains is spectacular.

THE COLCA CANYON

It is difficult to imagine a canyon twice as deep as the Grand Canyon until you have seen the Colca Canyon. At the start of the canyon it is about 500m deep but at Cabanaconde which is the last village in the Canyon it plummets to 1800m. The canyon itself is breathtaking especially with the 5th century terracing of the Collaguas people and the stone terracing of the Incas. The villages in the area are simple and many women still wear their traditional costumes. For those who are lucky you might even spot the sacred condor soaring through the canyon.

THE AMAZONIAN JUNGLE

IQUITOS

This is the chief town of Peruvian Amazon and is developing all the time. The lodge we stay in is about a 30 minute boat ride up a tributary of the Amazon. There is time to walk along one of the many trails in our Ecological area, to visit the Jibaro Indians, an Amazon tribe, to learn about their customs, handicrafts and way of life, as well as how they extract Cane Syrup to make chicha, the traditional local Rum, which of course you can try, but be careful as its a little strong. Afterwards further exploration with our guide who will point out and explain the many plants and trees which are used by the local people as medicines and food. There are also excursions to observe the great variety of exotic birds and to search for the famous freshwater Dolphins ( pink and grey ) which inhabit these waters. Local traditional fishing tools will be on hand i.e. fishing tackle, in case you would like to do some fishing for your supper. In the evening sit out on your veranda and listen to the mysterious night sounds of the jungle.

THE TAMBOPATA RESERVE

The largest nature reserve in Latin America lies in Peru's Madre de Dios department. The Indians mostly live along the banks of rivers and cultivate small plots of land. The rest of the jungle is virgin rain forest. You can't expect to see a lot of larger mammals and reptiles, but when you do it is especially exciting - stalking quietly along tracks along the forest floor or perhaps waiting for a giant anaconda to emerge amongst the grasses beside an oxbow lake. The naturalist guides are very knowledgeable and walks can vary from 1-7 hours. Our lodge is made entirely from local materials but is comfortable. Although there is a solar panel for the kitchen and dining area, candles are still used in the sleeping bungalows. After a day walking in the jungle it is nice to have a cold beer!

MANU

Manu National Park is a vast area divided into 3 zones; a cultural zone, a Reserve zone which tourists can visit and a Park zone that is protected. We will walk through the steamy jungle in search of some of the 12 species of monkey and many birds and in the evenings visit the Tapir clay lick. In the early morning we will depart by boat downstream to the only large Parrot and Macaw Lick in Manu . This is one of the worlds great wildlife spectacles, where you will find hundreds of medium to large size Parrots and the larger red and green Macaws, with up to twelve species visiting the Lick, to eat clay which is essential to their digestion. The noise of so many species of Parrot in one place is an experience in itself!! From our floating screens on the river you will have excellent opportunities to get close up photographs of this spectacle.

OTHER PLACES OF INTEREST

KUELAP

The giant fortress of Kuelap located in the district of Tingo in the province of Luya, sits on the summit of a tall rock face and is one of the least known archaeological discoveries in the world, still wild and unknown yet together with Machu Picchu a major monument in Peru. Built around 1200 BC by the Sachapuyas in the shape of an elongated ellipse, it defied all invaders, including the Incas. The Fortress was built out of carved limestone and it has often been compared to Sacsayhuaman and Machu Picchu. The three doorways to enter, were designed in a funnel shape allowing only one person to enter the fortress at a time. It is virtually impenetrable due to its sheer sides. The walk to reach the entrance is a steady climb through cloud forest and the view from the top of this ragged hill is awesome. Ask us about an exciting 6 day program to this spectacular yet little visited area.

MARCAHUASI (4200m)

Marcahuasi gained its reputation for being steeped in magic almost immediately after the Conquest when the Spanish set about 'the extirpation of idolatry'. Today only those in the know reach this plateau which stands over 4,000 meters above sea level. This is partly because it requires some organisation to get there. Ruins of the Yauyos civilisation (c.500 AD) can be seen up there together with their huge reservoirs and networks of irrigation canals which extend over a vast area of the high Andes. The magic was needed to make rain since the area is so dry. However, with water, just about everything can be cultivated from potatoes and quinua at high altitude, to avocado, oranges and coca leaves much lower down. The ruins would have been lived in by the shamans who guarded over magnificent natural rock formations which take the forms of giant animals, sculpted heads up to 40m high (monumento a la humanidad) , sphinxes etc. Marcahuasi continues to be a sacred site and a place of pilgrimage for Peruvians as opposed to being a tourist destination. To spend the night up here is literally like being on top of world and the sunset over the layers mountains is superb.

HUARAZ (3030 m)

Just the journey to this mountain resort town makes the visit worthwhile. Small farms are dotted through the valley with many picturesque villages and the majestic Cordillera Blanco rising to 6768 metres. No wonder Peruvians call this the "Switzerland" of South America. Huaraz is a pleasant, quiet town from where there are many good day walks or longer treks. We can arrange accommodation at a Swiss run lodge that has spectacular views of Mt. Huascaran.

CHICLAYO- The Lord of Sipan Tomb

The Lord of Sipan´s Tomb, known as the "King Tutankaman of the Americas", is certainly the most spectacular tomb found in recent years. It was discovered by the Archaeologist Dr. Walter Alva and his team in 1987. Four Tombs were found in Sipan Huaca Rajada, near the coast of the city of Chiclayo. The Huaca is a Mausoleum built by the Moche Culture that ruled the Northern Coast of Peru from the time of Christ to 700 A.D. The treasures of Sipan include masks, necklaces, earrings and other elaborated jewellery delicately made from gold, silver and copper and studded with turquoise and semi-precious stones, demonstrating that as metallurgical masters, they were unrivalled in the Americas. In the North of Chiclayo there are other monuments of the Moche culture, 26 colossal Pyramids, also excavated in recent years. The largest complex is El Tucume. The Moche Treasures are exhibited in the Bruning Museum in the City of Lambayeque, only a few kilometres from Chiclayo. The City also has a fascinating Herb Market, with all the natural remedies used by the regions Traditional Healers.

SECURITY AND HEALTH

In the early nineties there were serious problems with terrorism and theft. Services such as power, water and communications were frequently disrupted but the present government has brought the problem under control so that there is no concern to tourists. A prominent police presence has also drastically reduced theft from tourists so that it is now no more common than in the west. Obviously care and sensible precautions still need to be taken and our representatives will assist and give advice in each destination.

HEALTH

Statutory Health Requirements: There are no mandatory vaccination requirements unless coming from a Yellow Fever area but the normal precautions apply e.g. typhoid, hepatitis, malaria as described in the booklet Health Advice for Traveller's obtainable free from Doctors or by phoning 0800 555 777. The effects of altitude need to be respected and you should rest until you acclimatise.

TRAVEL IN BOLIVIA with Arc Journeys

INTRODUCTION

Bolivia is a delightful country to travel in. From the first dramatic moments of arriving into the highest capital City of the world to the moment you leave, the people, scenery and history will fascinate you. In the cities there is a balance of old and new, Indians sell traditional potions next to shiny offices and their traditional dress contrasts with the modern clothes and designer sunglasses of the young people. Women can be seen sitting by the dusty roadside, waiting for a bus, spinning their llama fibre and whilst the latest cars cruise the main plaza. Colonial history of the boom era can be seen in well preserved towns and Indian markets are hardly changed since the conquest. They are well stocked with brightly dyed wool, sacks of coca leaves and fruit from the lowlands and potatoes from the mountains. (There are 350 types of potato grown in the Andes).

SERVICES WE OFFER

This dossier gives a general description of the highlights of Peru and a range of sample itineraries. We can tailor-make an itinerary to suit your interests and travel plans. In Peru we also have a range of fixed departure tours where you can travel with a small group of international people. These are outlined at the end of this dossier. For the more adventurous we offer the 4 day Inca Trail, rafting or a gentle cycle ride in the Sacred Valley , horse riding excursions out of Cusco and cruises down the Amazon River. We can also arrange very special trips that explore the mysteries and magic of Peru where you can visit Shamans, sample the Ayawasca and learn about ancient traditions that are still believed today. We can arrange programs from 1 week to 2 months to incorporate the best of Peru and Bolivia. We can also help with the international flights at competitive rates.

Although tourism in Bolivia is has not yet become a big industry we have very reliable and efficient contacts who will look after you well. In Bolivia we can arrange anything from a 3 night extension from Peru to 1 month round trip which would include Lake Titicaca, the Andes, colonial towns, Inca sights and the jungle. We can arrange accommodation ranging from luxuriously restored colonial mansions to rustic haciendas. Transport can either be by private transfer or on longer journeys over the Andes a flight is usually more convenient. Apart from the destinations covered below we also have specialised programs for those interested in weaving, archaeology natural medicines and more. There is also some excellent trekking in Bolivia on remote Inca trails but it would be necessary to have a few days in La Paz to acclimatise. Bolivia makes an excellent combination with Peru by crossing Lake Titicaca or flying to Cusco and can also be combined with Chile or Argentina.

DESTINATIONS IN BOLIVIA

LA PAZ & VICINITY

LA PAZ (3600 m)

Whether you arrive in La Paz by air or overland from Peru or Chile you will be impressed by its extraordinary location. It is set in a basin below the high plateau and surrounded by the 6000m snow clad peaks. The cluttered old city sits side by side with modern multi-storey buildings and the main boulevard. Just a few minutes drive down the canyon is the extraordinary landscape of the Valley of the Moon where the rich have their villas at 1000m lower than the city. If you have trouble with the altitude you can stay here to acclimatise.

LAKE TITICACA

More like an inland sea, crossing this massive high altitude lake is an experience in itself an is a good way of travelling from Bolivia to Peru. In the clear air the waters reflect the blue skies and snow capped peaks of the Andes.

Isla Del Sol

It is possible to stay the night at this small island on the lake. There are Inca ruins and a Sacred Rock considered to be the birthplace of the first Inca. There are lovely half day walks and the views extend to the snow-capped mountains on the mainland. Accommodation is at a simple but comfortable restored hacienda.

Copacabana

The pilgrimage town of Copacabana is famous not only for the Virgin of Candelaria but more recently by Michael Palin's visit. The Cathedral housing the statue has an impressive Moorish design. There is an optional walk to the Cerro Calvario via the Stations of the Cross.

Huatajata

A chance to get an overview Bolivian history and culture at the "Andean Roots Cultural Complex" where you can stay on the lake. You can even have your fortune read in the coca leaves by a traditional priest.

TIWANAKU

This is the most significant ruin in Bolivia. It is that that it was constructed around 1600 BC by a civilisation that may have had 20,000 people making it the largest city in the world at that time. The ruins are an enormous complex including a sunken temple, a pyramid and the Sun Gate. The carving of huge monoliths is very fine.

THE YUNGAS

This is the name given to the lush forests between the Cordillera Real and the Amazonian jungle. The 3 hour adventurous journey from La Paz takes you over the barren La Cumbre Pass at 4725m down into the lush valleys. The picturesque town of Coroico is at 1525m and offers delightful walks through orange groves and a warmer climate.

SUCRE & VICINITY

SUCRE (2800 m)

This pleasant colonial city is the official capital of Bolivia but one wouldn't think so by its size and pace of life. It has a more relaxed atmosphere than La Paz and has only one tenth of its population. The centre of the city has been preserved as a classic Spanish colonial town with white-washed walls and orange roof tiles. Many buildings date back to the 16th and 17th centuries such as the Casa de la Libertad, the Cathedral and the first South American university founded in 1624. Being a university town there are many young people and the town comes alive in the early evenings. There are several museums which recall the history of Sucre and Bolivia as well as one dedicated to the local weaving styles and festivals. There are many churches and old monasteries that we can arrange for you to visit such as San Felipe Neri which has lovely courtyard and a view from the roof over the town.

POTOSI (4070 M)

Cerro Rico is a huge bare mountain that stands behind Potosi town. The silver found within this mountain gave rise to the biggest silver mine in the world at that time and also to the city of Potosi. The Spanish founded the city in 1545 and legend has it that there was enough silver taken from the hill to build a bridge from there to Spain. It certainly made Bolivia one of the richest regions of the world. When most of the silver had been taken the city became a ghost town leaving it preserved in its colonial state. It was the demand for tin that re-vitalised the city and now silver, tin, copper and lead are also mined. The working conditions have never been very good and the mine has a tragic history. It is indeed an eerie experience to visit the mine but fascinating to watch the techniques employed to work the mountain. The city of Potosi itself has 2000 colonial buildings. Some of the grander ones such as the Mint , the Cathedral, and several churches with Baroque-Mestizo facades are impressive but most of the others are run down. The town itself is not as picturesque as Sucre.

TARABUCO INDIAN MARKET

About one and a half hours drive from Sucre is the village of Tarabuco. Not much happens there except on Sundays when the place is transformed by the weekly market. Women and men wearing an extraordinary selection of hats, woven skirts and cloaks throng the streets or haggle for supplies. Some hats have pom-poms sticking up from the top, others are made in Spanish Conquistador style. Weavings are the popular choice for tourists and locals alike although much other produce is available such as vegetables, coca leaf, dyes or coloured thread, machetes, kitchen utensils.

CANDELARIA

Not far from Tarabuco (but the road is rough) is the Hacienda La Candelaria. This 300 year old hacienda has been transformed into a simple guesthouse. The emphasis on a stay at the hacienda is on local experiences rather than a luxury stay. We can arrange demonstrations and workshops on local weaving styles, traditional cooking, dance performances as well as walks to neighbouring villages and pre-Inca sites. You will see traditional meals prepared over a simple wood stove and dinner is by candle light.

UYUNI SALT LAKE

This lake is an extraordinary sight. The vast glistening surface reflects the stars at night. The people in the nearby town of Uyuni have adapted to harsh conditions and still extract the salt by traditional methods. Even the hotel you stay in is made of salt!

THE JUNGLE

There are vast areas of lush tropical forest in the north and east of Bolivia. Including the Amazon basin and the pantanal wetlands. Although deforestation is occurring at alarming rates the government is trying to control it with the help of UNESCO. It is still possible to cruise the massive rivers of the jungle or stay at lodges to see birds, wildlife and the dense entanglements of the lianas and strangling figs.

SANTA CRUZ

Santa Cruz is the fastest growing city in Bolivia. It has a warm tropical climate and a vibrant night life. There is a mix of colonial and modern architecture and the central plaza is home to several sloths! East of Santa Cruz are the Jesuit Missions built in an extraordinary blend of Spanish and rustic local styles. It is possible to visit the schools and stay overnight to get a sense of living out history. The Samaipata Ruins are the "Bolivian Kuelap"; Inca ruins that have been little explored and present quite an adventure to get to.
