In recent history Laos and Cambodia have been overshadowed by their larger neighbours; Thailand, Vietnam and China. Even now tourism is having a slow start in these countries. Not because they are not interesting places to visit but rather because there are too many other things to worry about. This in itself makes them attractive destinations for people who want a different holiday experience. Facilities, though comfortable, are rarely luxurious and the internal travelling can be rough and unpredictable to say the least. However the effort to visit both or either of these countries is well rewarded. Only a few thousand people a year visit Laos and its years of isolation, its rich history, distinctive cultures, and magnificent scenery have left it as an unexplored gem.
With its gentle pace of life, its colourful temples and monasteries and smiling people has great charm and Cambodia with the world renowned Angkor Wat temple and the centuries old Khmer culture is also very appealing. However, travel is restricted to areas of the country considered safe at the time by the authorities and this currently includes the capital and the famous Buddhist monument of Angkor Wat.
All our arrangements are tailor made to your requirements. Some of our staff have travelled to Laos and we use local ground operators therefore we offer you personal and informed service. The illustrations on the following pages are only to give an idea of some of the possibilities and to help you plan your route. We prepare individual proposals and quotations free of charge and without obligation. The travelling is either by air or in a private vehicle with driver and guide where requested. Accommodation ranges from simple rooms to very comfortable hotels, some with leafy gardens, swimming pools, a bar and restaurant.
If you would like to combine your stay here with one of our other destinations such as Vietnam, Thailand, Yunnan, Malaysia or Indonesia please contact us for a dossier.

VIENTIANE
Vientiane has a reputation for being the slowest- paced capital city in the world. This is changing especially since 1994 when the first bridge over the Mekong to link Thailand and Laos was opened. More traffic is evident now but it still has the charm of a town rather than a nation's capital. A leisurely walk around the town and along the banks of the great Mekong River will take you past several Wats (Buddhist Temples) and monuments. The Monks are friendly and will often ask you in to get a closer look. The French influence is obvious in some of the architecture and also in a few of the restaurant in the centre of town. There is also a great morning market which makes an interesting visit even for those who hate shopping.
LUANG PRABANG
Luang Prabang is situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan. Even smaller and slower the Vientiane it is a popular place for travellers who need a rest. There is a tranquillity brought about by the number of monasteries and the lack of industry. Wat Xieng Thong has magnificent bouganvillea surrounding the elegant buildings. The Wat Chan Si, perched on the top of Phousi Hill is worth visiting if only for the view over the town and rivers, especially at dusk. There are good markets to visit and neighbouring villages that weave traditional Laos cloth. You can take a magnificent boat trip up the Mekong to the holy Pak Ou Caves which house thousands of Buddha images. If you want to go overland to Luang Prabang we can arrange a stop at the enchanting village of Vang Vieng.
PLAIN OF JARS
The unexplained presence of over 300 enormous jars on a 1000 metre plateau near the town of Phosavanh is a curious sight. These jars are up to 2.5 metres high and 1 metre in diameter and may have been used as funeral urns. Some archeologists believe they are over 2000 years old. It requires patience and some hard work to appreciate these jars as the tourist infrastructure is not very well established.
PAKSE
Pakse is situated in the south of Laos on the junction of the Mekong and Xe Dong rivers. It is at the crossroads of the routes to Vietnam and Cambodia. As such it has always been an important commercial centre of the region. The half finished palace of the late Prince Boun Oum of the kingdom of Champassak. It stands out in obscure contrast to the sprawling town which surrounds it. More pleasant is the Wat Phou in the nearby town of Champassak. It has religious significance to the early Hindus and was built 200 years earlier than Angkor Wat. It now lies in ruins but its overall shape and expanse give an insight into life in 6th Century Laos. It is also possible to visit the villages of the Alack and Kalum minority groups for an insight into present day Laos.
PHNOM PENH
Before 1970 Phnom Penh was considered to be "the beguiling beauty of Indochina". It is still has a vibrant atmosphere but much of its former glory has fallen into disrepair. The wide boulevards are now a series of potholes and the elegant villas and town houses are in need of more than a coat of paint. Still some of the previous charms have survived such as the Silver Pagoda and the Royal Palace. In stark contrast to the museums that proudly display Khmer art there is the Tuol Sleng Museum that tells of the brutality of the PolPot regime. Just by exploring the streets, you will see many wats and encounter the warmth of the people.
SIEM REAP/ ANGKOR WAT
Without doubt Angkor Wat has to be one of the most splendid religious monuments ever built. It was built in the 12th century, at the height of the Khmer Empire. Initially Hindu and later Buddhist, the exquisite bas-relief work and sculpture that adorn the temples and buildings recount the myths and mysticism of the once great culture. Social decline and the encroachment of the surrounding jungle cloaked Angkor in a veil of mystery that was revealed by a French explorer in the 1860's. Since that time the work that has been done to restore the temple complex has been done to restore the temple complex has not always been successful but the mysticism and spiritualism of this great place still exists.
TYPICAL ITINERARIES
Each of these areas can be visited individually or all could be included in a minimum two week itinerary. We can also arrange extensions in Thailand, Yunnan or Vietnam.
