The Republic of Ecuador took its name in the early 1800's from the equatorial line that runs through its heart. Known as a kind of giant natural laboratory, the French scientist La Condamine, the German Alexander von Humboldt, the Englishmen Charles Darwin and Edward Whymper, all published adventure books detailing their adventure travels in Ecuador. These recount a land of fantastic animals, icecapped volcanoes and impenetrable Amazonian jungle. Politically one of the most stable countries in Latin America, Ecuador is also amongst the safest to travel around. Having largely avoided the most bitter extremes of poverty that afflict other Andean countries such as Bolivia and Peru, Ecuadorians remain an approachable and easygoing people. They include descendents of the Spanish conquistadors and original pre-Columbian inhabitants, many of whom still speak Quichua and maintain traditions from lncan times and before. Add to this cultural wealth, Ecuador's compact diversity although only half the size of France, it contains the snowcapped Andes, the Pacific coast and expanses of Amazon jungle and you begin to see why Ecuador is rapidly earning a reputation for being one of the most popular destinations in South America.

This Dossier gives a general description of Ecuador and a range of sample itineraries. Anything described here can be incorporated into a tailormade itinerary arranged especially for you, and some of the itineraries are also available as fixed date group departures. In the Galapagos we have boats which individuals can join at any time of the year (although not all boats are available at all times) or many of them can also be chartered at any time complete with crew.
Boats range from beautiful yachts and motor-sailers with just a few berths, through luxury yachts to full size cruise ships. Each provides a different experience of the islands at a different budget. We concentrate on Ecuador because in addition to the unique Galapagos Islands, mainland Ecuador has the full range of South American experiences in a more compact, accessible and secure setting than most of the other countries. Amazon jungle, snow capped volcanoes, high valleys, Inca sites, Indian markets, Colonial cities, tropical beaches, varied birds and wildlife can all be experienced in one tour. Trekking in the Andes and the Amazon, mountaineering on volcanoes, wildlife and birdwatching, colonial cities, Inca and Indian culture, diving, snorkelling, and many other special interest tours can be arranged. If you are interested in anything described here please contact us for more information about availability. If what you want is not here please let us know what you are looking for because there are other options which there is not space to describe here. All tailor made tours are different so the itineraries described are only suggestions to illustrate some of the possibilities. We prepare a personal proposal and quotation free of charge and without obligation.

The Galapagos Islands... there is nothing in the world quite like them. It is a dramatic yet beautiful world of volcanic landscapes and fearless animals. Giant Tortoises, Fur Seals, Sea Lions, Land and Sea Iguanas and many species of birds. A visit to this impressive wildlife sanctuary, will be a memorable experience for those who appreciate nature.
Located in the Pacific Ocean 1000 km off the coast of Ecuador, the isolation of the islands has permitted life forms to evolve into species found only in Galapagos. Today the Galapagos Islands are a well managed and protected National Park.
The Yacht Experience
Travelling aboard a yacht assures a unique experience in the islands and allows visitors to appreciate their mystery and tranquillity. Leaning over the bow, passengers can watch the dolphins playing on the bow wave just a few feet away...or relax on deck in a quiet anchorage ... wander along a desolate beach watching the ghost crabs scuttle into their holes, while boobies and pelicans wheel and dive just beyond the surf.
We offer an opportunity to see the Galapagos Islands aboard comfortable motor Yachts, motor sailers and sailboats. Small sized groups allow visitors to see the best sites, some of which are off limits to large cruise ships. The itineraries are flexible to take advantage of seasonal highlights, such as whales surfacing, varying weather and ocean conditions, and unexpected occurrences like volcanic activity. Each boat has a full crew including a multilingual naturalist guide who has been trained and licensed by the Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station.
Participants do not need boating experience but should be prepared for life on board. For those who want a sense of adventure and can accept a minimum of luxuries, yacht travel will be exhilarating.

Underwater Galapagos
Underwater Galapagos can be as exciting and interesting as Galapagos ashore. The combination of ocean fish, birds, mammals and reptiles sets Galapagos apart from other marine environments; snorkellers and divers share the water with penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, sea turtles, angel fish, large schools of Emberjacks and many other species of fish. The Ecuadorian crews know where scuba divers can see the best underwater sights, such as Hammer-Head Sharks.

THE ISLANDS
Baltra
The US army occupied this island during World War II and built the first landing strip for jets which is presently used for daily flights to and from the islands. The main plants on this barren island are cacti, Palo Santo trees and grasses.
Santa Cruz
The Charles Darwin Research Station and headquarters of the Galapagos National Park may be visited at Puerto Ayora, the Islands' most populated human settlement. The highlands offer the lush humid zone with its vegetation of Miconia bushes, Scalesia and inactive volcanic cones. Santa Cruz has more endemic plants than any other island in the Galapagos, also the Galapagos Tortoise can be seen in its natural habitat here.
South Plaza
This island was formed by uplifted lava and is covered by Opuntia cacti growing over low patches of Sesuvium. Here,Land Iguanas. Sea Lions, Swallow Tailed Gulls, Red Billed Tropic Birds, Audubon's Shearwaters and more can be seen.
Barrington
Here we find an endemic species of Land Iguana and a forest of impressively tall Opuntia cacti "trees". Also the Galapagos Mockingbird, Magnificent Frigate, Brown Pelican and several species of Darwin's Finches are common sights.
Floreana
At Point Cormorant we visit a flamingo lagoon where other species of shore birds may also be seen. We snorkel at the Devil's Crown a submerged volcanic cone and at Post Office Bay one may leave letters like whalers did in the 18th century. in a wooden barrel mailbox.
Hood
Punta Suarez offers the visitor quite a display of wildlife: Marine Iguanas with copper red patches, Swallow Tailed Gulls, the endemic Long Billed Mocking Bird, Finches, Masked and Blue Footed Boobies, Oyster-catchers, Sea Lions and Lava Lizards. This is the only island where the Waved Albatross is to be seen during the breeding season, April to December.
James
At Puerto Egas one may swim and play with the Galapagos Fur Seals in pools cut into lava cliffs and there is a good chance of spotting the Galapagos Hawk, the Galapagos Dove and vermilion Flycatcher. Tucked behind Espumilla Beach are salt water lagoons where Flamingos and White Checked Pintail Ducks may be seen.
Bartolome/Sullivan Bay
Nowhere else is the geological history of the archipelago better portrayed. The most impressive volcanic scenery may be viewed from the top of Bartolome; varied lava formations, volcanic peaks and the moon like landscape.
Jervis
Its volcanic rocks are covered by Opuntia cacti, Palo Santo trees and low scrubby bushes. Sea Lions abound on the red sand beach, behind which is a flamingo lagoon. Several species of Darwin's Finches may be seen here.
Sombrero Chino
Very scenic little island in the shape of a Chinese hat. Good spot to snorkel with the Sea Lions and the Galapagos Penguin.

The largest colony of Magnificent Frigate Birds is found here, as well as nesting Blue Footed Boobies and Swallow Tailed Gulls.
Tower
Here one finds Red Footed and Masked boobie colonies, Lava Gulls, Night Herons, Mockingbirds, Frigate Birds and finches surrounding the white coral sands of Darwin's Bay. To the East of the Prince Philip landing, one may observe Red Billed Tropic Birds, nesting Boobies and a colony of Storm Petrels.
Fernandina
At Punta Espinosa Flightless Cormorants, Pelicans, Sea Lions, Sally Light Foot Crabs and an abundance of Marine Iguanas can be seen along the shores of one of world's most active volcanoes.
Tagus Cove.
Tagus Cove is located on the Western side of Isabela and was once a favourite anchorage for whalers and pirates. Here the trail leads to a high point for an impressive view of the crater lake and the lava flows of Darwin Volcano. A boat ride along the cliffs is taken to observe the Galapagos Penguin and the Flightless Cormorant.

DESTINATIONS IN MAINLAND ECUADOR
QUITO
Ecuador is the smallest of South America's Andean republics and with out doubt the easiest to explore. Quito, 2 850m, capital of Ecuador and former northern capital of the Inca Empire is the perfect base for travellers and for most, their point of arrival. Unlike other Latin American capitals, Quito has not been swamped by a population explosion; its elegant colonial heart is preserved in the 18th century, while the modern "new town" offers every comfort from the 20th century.
Wander the streets of Quito to explore the museum of Indian and Colonial art, beautiful cathedrals, elegant old world mansions, interesting museums, plazas and parks with statues of historical personalities, first class hotels and charming pensions, delightful restaurants, fashionable shops and street markets selling a wealth of Ecuadorian jewels, arts and crafts.
Full or half day tours can be arranged to visit the significant historical or archaeological sights. These can include the La Compania Church, San Francisco Church and the Central Bank Museum which has an excellent collection of artifacts, some dating back 1,200 years.
Quito sits in a cool Andean plateau surrounded by majestic mountains, some of which are snowcapped year round. The Andean highlands remain Ecuador's heartland. The classic excursion from Ouito, and one of the country's most famous attractions, is a short trip north for the Saturday handicraft market in Otavalo. Then, stretching South of Quito, is the lush mountain valley that the German scientist Alexander von Humboldt dubbed "the Avenue of the Volcanoes."
See below for longer excursions from Quito.

CUENCA
Cuenca, the third largest city in Ecuador, is situated midway between Quito and Guayaquil in a fertile valley. Perhaps because of its isolation Cuenca has kept its old-world architectural charm and its feeling of the colonial period. It is considered by most Ecuadorians to be the most beautiful city in the country, as well as the centre of arts and crafts such as jewellery making and ceramics. A city tour to discover the charm of Cuenca can be arranged and it makes a good base to see the all- important Ingapirca ruins. The surrounding countryside and villages can also be explored.

INGAPIRCA
Ingapirca means lnca Stone Wall. The name was given to the site by the Canaris. The Inca, Huayna Capac built Ingapirca in the 15th century on the royal highway that ran from Quito to Cuzco and stationed soldiers there to keep the Canaris under control.Throughout the Inca empire outlying Inca settlements had multiple functions and were intended to be models of Cuzco on a much smaller scale. The remains of lngapirca suggest the site probably had storehouses, baths, a royal tambo or inn for the Inca, dwellings for soldiers and other staff, and a sun temple. This was made of green diorite and modelled after the Coricancha, the main temple in Cuzco. The high quality mortarless stonework indicates that lngapirca was an important site. The Incas often chose hilltops for their settlements, both for defensive reasons and to free flat valley land for cultivation. Much of Ingapirca was dismantled over the centuries by local people who used the stones in their own buildings. The site has been excavated by various archaeological teams including a Spanish group in the early 1970s, which discovered what were probably pre-lncan Canari burials on the Pilaloma, a small hill facing the temple.

MARKETS
One of the most fascinating and unique things about Ecuador is its markets. In any given region, the market is held on a different day of the week in a different town square. Market day is a grand, colourful fiesta with hundreds of people buying and selling almost everything; food, hardware, clothing, tapestries, with most things made or produced locally. Vendors and buyers travel from miles around, in carts, on donkeys, on foot, or by truck to buy, sell or trade.
One day visits to one or more of Saquisili, Pujili, Ambato, Latacunga, Zumbahua and the popular Otavalo markets can be arranged from Quito.
These tours travel through some stunning countryside and small villages to reach the market and offer great photo opportunities. It is possible to extend these trips overnight.

THE AVENUE OF THE VOLCANOES
The Andes run in two parallel ranges the length of Ecuador. These are known as the Eastern and Western Cordilleras, and are connected by inter mountain ranges. In between each of these lie a series of valleys between 2,300 m and 3,000 m with fertile volcanic soil. In these valleys one finds the principal towns and the main part of Ecuadorian agriculture. Both the Pan- American highway and the railway run north- south between the Cordilleras, rising up and down, past fields and farms beneath snow capped volcanoes. It was in 1802 the German explorer Alexander Von Humbolt, in a fit of inspiration, named this route the "Avenue of the Volcanoes". By leaving this route and hiking or climbing, one passes through all the earth's ecological zones, from subtropical to arctic.
Cotopaxi National Park
60krn south of Quito lies the base of Cotopaxi, the world's highest active volcano at 5850m. Here we observe the low growing vegetation of the paramo home to the Tury Hummingbird, the Andean Hillstar and the giant Andean -Condor, with its 3m wingspan. (See trekking)
Banos Cloud Forest
Banos nestles into the hills surrounded by forest and makes an excellent base for day walks, horse riding or treks. Relax in the thermal springs at the end of the day. Visit a cloud forest area, with an enormous variety of plant and bird life and enjoy the Pastaza Canyon and its themal baths.
Chimborazo Volcano
Chimborazo is located 150 km South of Quito. This extinct volcano is the highest mountain in the country. It is considered to be the point on the earth's surface which is furthest from its centre. Being such a high mountain many attempted the summit during the 17th and 18th centuries before it was actually climbed by Whymper and the Carrels in 1880. There are five summits: The Whymper summit at 6,310m, the Veintimilla summit at 6,267m, the North summit at 6,200m, the Central summit at 6000m and the, Eastern summit at about 5500m. The latter has the reputation of being the most difficult. (See Trekking)

Crossing East over the Andes, one drops down from 4000m to the head waters of the mighty Amazon, passing from high altiplano to tropical jungle in less than 150km. This area is known as the Oriente. Seeing this green covered world with hundreds of species of birds, beautiful butterflies, and strange animals in their natural habitat, then going to bed in your camp or lodge with the soft sounds of the forest night, is a unique experience. Awakening in the morning to an orchestra of bird music, travelling in a dugout canoe, visiting isolated, Indian communities, all add to this adventure. There are two main ways of experiencing the jungle; by staying in a lodge with full private facilities, bar and restaurant or camping with shared facilities, as in the Cuyabeno itinerary.

NATURE AND BIRD WATCHING TOURS
Ecuador is a nature lover's paradise. The wide variety of vegetation, from high paramo to tropical rain forests and mangrove swamps, make it the home to a greater number of species than any other country in Latin America. Over 1,500species of birds and 3,000 species of orchids have been recorded - twice that of continental USA. We have selected 1 and 2 day tours to take the enthusiast through a cross- section of the Ecuadorian country-side and to some of the best known places for birdwatching. These include; Cotapaxi National Park, Tinalandia, Papallacta Pass, Pasochoa Nature Reserve and the lesser known but equally impressive Nono-Mindo and Chiraboga Roads.

*NB This trek is at altitudes over 3000m. You should be well acclimatised before starting,
Otavalo Countryside (5 days) Suitable for beginners
Visit the colourful artisan villages as well as enjoying the exceptional countryside and dramatic terrain. The snowcovered volcano Cayambe (5.790m), rises. We rise early to appreciate the views. The trekker will pass through highly varied vegetation zones including paramo wilderness, on the journey from 'La Esperanza, then on to the areas of Mariano Acosta and finally descending on bicycles to Lago San Pablo (near Otavalo) where you will stay in a Hacienda on the 4th night. Make sure you time it to see the Otavalo market on Saturdays,
From The Andes To The Jungle (6 days) Suitable for experienced trekkers.
This is our most difficult trekking tour for those who have some experience with rough, cross country terrain and who are in very good physical condition. This strenuous program will expose the adventurous trekker to an uninhabited area with highlands, tropical cloud forest and Amazon lowlands.
The journey on foot begins in El Quinche (4100m) ending at El Chaco (1200m). On this six day trek our usual campsite luxuries and pack animals will have to be left behind after the third day, but the rugged experience will be worth the effort. From the village of Oyacachi we leave all traces of habitation and for 4 days we will follow the Rio to El Chaco near the confluence of Rios Oyacachi, Quijos and Sardinas Grande.
Cotopaxi Volcano 5879m Active (2 days)
Ice climbing equipment required - suitable for experienced trekkers.
The highest active volcano in the world, the 2nd highest in Ecuador, located 60km South of Quito.
Day I. Departing from Quito, we mill visit the Cotopaxi National Park and the Limpiopungo Lagoon, arriving at the Refuge (4.800m), late in the afternoon.
Day 2. Leaving the Refuge in the early hours of the morning, we will begin the 5-8 hour climb to the crater, crossing several glaciers. Arriving at dawn, cloud cover permitting we have spectacular views of Quito and the nearby volcanoes. We return to the Refuge (3 hours) then drive back to Quito.
Optional. This tour can be extended by a further day, trekking in the National Park, or three days trekking from Papallacta via Antisana, to facilitate acclimatisation.
* *Technical Information Applicable To All Trekking Tours.
Each trekking party will be in the competent hands of an experienced Group Leader who will be assisted by several local staff to help with the pack animals and campsites. We provide high quality camping equipment and in most instances we use pack mules to carry our equipment.
Attire, to be supplied by the trekker, should include clothing appropriate to all weather conditions, from warm sunny afternoons to chilly, damp (or wet) mornings and evenings. A polar jacket with a rain poncho (or Gortex rain gear), a sleeping bag, hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, personal toilet articles and suntan lotion are absolutely essential
In all cases we would strongly recommend a minimum of two days to acclimatise in Quito.
We organise our RAFTING tours on a request only basis. Many of Ecuador's rivers can be run year round, others more technical are only possible during certain seasons. There are three main rivers which we run. The Toachi River flows out of the highlands East of Quito. Class Ill and IV rapids make it exciting for beginners as one passes through incredible cloud forest. Many species of colourful birds such as Mountain Toucans and parrots are seen and even on occasion Giant River Otters.
The Puyango river in the Southern part of the country has one of the best reputations with white water rapids from Grades II to IV. This is an excellent 2 day trip, the first take out point being the small ,village of Balsas. Passing through a canyon and the remains of a petrified forest, we see gold panners, then as the canyon widens, we float past the 'campesinos' at work in the fields.
The Quijos river, approached from Baeza, is for the more experienced rafter. From El Chaco, one encounters rapids from class II to V. The second day is even tougher, as one floats through a deep narrow gorge, huge boulders littering the river.
COMBINED ADVENTURE ITINERARY 7 days
Here we have combined some of our most popular excursions to provide a cross section of adventure travel in Ecuador.
Day 1. Otavalo Area. Our early departure from Quito will take us on a three hour drive through dramatic mountain country to the province of Imbabura, where we can devote the day to visiting Peguche, Otavalo, Cotacachi and San Antonio de Ibarra. If the tour begins on a Saturday, market day in Otavalo, we will attend Ecuador's famous Indian fair. The Otavalo Indians are the most industrious and prosperous of native craftsmen and merchants in Ecuador and their lively market is piled high with colourful ponchos, hats, woven goods and Indian jewellery. Peguche is known for its weaving, Cotacachi for its leather works and San Antonio de Ibarra for its excellent wood carvings. Bikes will be available for a group ride around the countryside. Overnight at a hacienda or hotel.
Day 2. Train ride to San Lorenzo. At dawn, we drive to Ibarra where we will board an "autoferro" for a scenic day's ride to San Lorenzo. The route climbs over the Western Cordillera of The Andes and descends through the tropical rain forest and the Northwestern plain of Ecuador. Arrival in San Lorenzo in time for dinner, with overnight stay at a local hotel.
Day 3. Coastal canoe ride and biking . We start the day with a three-hour canoe ride, passing through mangrove habitat to the island of La Tolita. It is believed that the people of La Tolita were the first to work with platinum. We see the remains of their pre-lncan culture, then continue by canoe in a Southerly direction to the small village of La Tola, where we are met by our bus ready with bicycles for cycling along Ecuador's beautiful coastline, The bus will accompany bikers, as an option for those who would rather ride at any point during the journey. Dinner and overnight stay at a beach resort.
Day 4. Tropical beach. This day is for your relaxation and pleasure. You may wish to spend time on the sandy beach bathing in the Pacific waters or devote your day to biking or playing tennis. In season, we will have an evening visit to Tonchigue to observe the spectacular event of local fishermen arriving in their torchlit dugout canoes, joined by their families on the beach to unload the catches of the day. Overnight stay at the same beach resort.
Day 5. Visit to nearby Muisne Island and coastal area. Thirty minutes south of the resort we come to the village of Muisne, where we board a launch to take us to this island, with its small population, palm trees, sandy beach and tropical waters. After a picnic lunch. we visit the coastal area, returning to our beach resort.
Day 6. Rafting. Our bus will take us near to Santo Domingo de los Colorados, where we will receive instructions from an expert guide before we board our inflatable raft on the river Toachi. A full day of excitement follows on Class 111 and Class IV rapids, which run through forested cliffs and tropical fam-dand. A late afternoon drive with dramatic views will take us to the 300-year old hacienda of La Cienega. where we will have dinner and stay overnight.
Day 7. Cotopaxi National Park. For the early riser horseback riding is available before breakfast. Our last day will be spent in the beautiful Cotopaxi Park at the base of the world's highest active volcano (5.897m). Bikes will be available for the group to ride through Paramo vegetation. On a good day we might see rabbits llamas, deer, wild horses and many species of birds. Picnic lunch in the Park. Bus ride to Quito, for arrival late afternoon.
Optional.. The above program can be changed to include two days visiting a native village up the Cayapas River by canoe, replacing 2 of the days at the beach resort.
POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING YOUR HOLIDAY:
Health: Statutory Health Requirements: There are no mandatory vaccination requirements unless coming from a Yellow Fever area but the normal precautions apply e.g. typhoid, hepatitis, malaria as described in the booklet Health Advice for Traveller's obtainable free from Doctors or by phoning 0800 555 777. The effects of altitude need to be respected and you should rest until you acclimatise.
When to Go: Our tours run all year round. The hot season in the Galapagos is Dec to May. You can expect some rain but the water is warm. June to Nov it is cooler, windier and cloudier but still pleasant enough. The Mainland temperatures vary from the coast to the highlands to the jungle. The main rain in the jungle region is April to Sep.
Festivals: As well as the Christian festivals which are celebrated throughout, each major town celebrates Independence Day. These seem to happen Oct/Nov.
How to get there: You can book flights to Quito or Guayaquil through one of the many flight agents. KLM have flights from regional airports via Amsterdam and the Carribean. Iberia has flights via Madrid. American Airlines and Continental also have flights via their USA hubs but these tend to be more expensive.
Extensions: Any itinerary would combine well with Peru, Bolivia or any South American country. On KLM you can have a stopover in Curacao or Aruba.
