What Arc Journeys Offer

Tailormade Holidays at standard tour rates

in Asia, South East Asia, Australasia, Africa, South America, Arctic, Indochina & UK

Arc Journeys design tailor made tours to suit your requirements which need cost no more than a standard tour with equivalent accommodation.. You tell us what you would most like to do or see and we prepare itineraries for you to consider- it's as simple as that!

Arc Journeys is small enough but experienced enough to provide truly personally arranged tours to suit your interests, style of travel and budget. Your enquiry is handled by a single person, who prepares quotes and itineraries in accordance with your requests, free of  charge and without obligation.  David Halford ran his first architecture tour in 1992 and started Arc Journeys (David Halford Travel) in 1992. Angela Molinaro has worked in travel and led tours since 1990. We have experience of travel in over 60 countries and have first hand knowledge of most of the destinations we offer. We are both qualified professional people who aim to provide an efficient but personal service. On tailor made tours we use experienced local staff who bring an extra dimension of knowledge about their area. We also try to arrange trips that have minimum impact and maximum benefit by using local businesses and guides who understand their natural and cultural environment. Unlike many companies that offer tailor made ("custom made", "customized", "bespoke") travel we take the time to prepare itineraries that are unique to you.

For details and itineraries of other destinations please go to the relevant Dossier web page as listed in the MAIN INDEX.

We can arrange all this and more: ROMANTIC HIDEAWAYS, HUG AN ORPHAN ORANGUTAN, DOG SLEDDING IN THE ARCTIC, CRUISE IN THE GALAPAGOS, SNORKEL CORAL REEFS, CLIMB VOLCANOES, WHALE-WATCHING, GREAT TRAIN JOURNEYS, JUNGLE RIVER CRUISES, EXCLUSIVE HOTELS OR LOCAL HUTS, TREK THE HIMALAYAS OR THE ANDES, CAMEL, HORSE, ELEPHANT OR WALKING SAFARIS, APPRECIATE ARCHITECTURE, ARTS, CRAFTS, TEXTILES, MUSIC, FESTIVALS, DANCE AND CUISINE.

DESTINATIONS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

NAMIBIA

Namibia is a land of strange conjunctions; the searing sands of the Namib desert sweep down to a foggy coast where penguins, seals, cormorants and whales can be seen almost in the same glance as Oryx, gemsbok, ostrich and other desert animals. Quaint German towns fixed in the year 1915, full of half-timbered Bavarian buildings and Bier Kellers suddenly appear out of the mirage, the barren salt pans merging into their salt paved streets. Herero tribeswomen who adopted flamboyant nineteenth century colonial dress as their own, add colour to the streets of the modern capital of Windhoek.

From North to South the main destinations of interest are:

Etosha National Park.

This encompasses a great salt lake surrounded by bush. It supports 114 species of classic African game but what makes it possibly the best place to view wildlife is the fact that all the animals must come to the waterholes at some time or other. Rather than driving around looking at game running away from you it is possible to simply sit at a waterhole and watch the animals arriving. This gives you the chance to watch them behaving normally because they take no notice of stationary vehicles and in particular you can observe how different animals interact with each other.

The Caprivi Strip.

This is a narrow link between Namibia proper and Zimbabwe/Botswana/Zambia. The Okavango, Kwando, Linyati, Chobe and Zambezi rivers all flow through the Caprivi. The area is very sparsely populated but there are a couple of Lodges which give access to the wildlife, particularly birds, of the riverine habitat.

Kaokoland, Damaraland and the Skeleton Coast.

The north-west of the country has a wide variety of scenery in itself, from the green valley of the Kunene river on the Angolan border which is the home of the stately Himba pastoralists to the red sands of Hartmann Valley populated only by animals such as elephant and rhino which have adapted to the harsh conditions. Much of this area is a Wilderness reserve with strictly limited access.

The Kalahari Desert.

This is a vast region of dry scrubland which covers large parts of Botswana and South Africa as well as Namibia. The Bushmen of the Kalahari are well known but seldom seen because they continue their stone-age nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle in one of the remotest parts of the world. Bushman cave paintings, some of which are very ancient can be seen in several areas. The open country allows you to see plenty of game such as the elegant gemsbok and the prancing springbok.

The Namib Desert.

This runs right down the coast and encompasses highlands, wetlands and canyons as well as Sesriem Gorge and the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. The Namib lives up to the typical image of a true desert.

Fish River Canyon.

This is the second biggest canyon in the world and the scenery is a spectacular as its Arizona counterpart. The canyon can be viewed from various points along its 160km rim or trekked by the more intrepid, ending up at the hot springs of Ai Ais.

The German Towns.

Although the region was only controlled by Germany for a short period before the First World War the three main towns have retained their incongruous Germanic character. Windhoek, the capital is conveniently located right in the centre of the country, Swakopmund is a quaint seaside resort between the Namib Naukluft National Park and the Skeleton Coast and Luderitz is an old diamond mining port surrounded by ghost towns and close to a string of coastal islands rich in the sea life supported by the cold Benguela current which flows up from the Antarctic.

BOTSWANA

Most of Botswana is covered by the dry scrub and salt pans of the Kalahari but two rivers flowing out of Angola create a completely different landscape in the north of the country.

The Okavango Delta.

The Okavango flows for thousands of kilometres until it reaches the Kalahari where it spreads out over an area of up to 15,000 km2 and eventually sinks into the desert. This vast oasis of shallow channels and green islands supports its own array of specially adapted and water loving wildlife.

The Chobe National Park.

The Chobe river flows along the border with the Caprivi Strip and into the Zambezi above Victoria Falls. The area along the river is noted for high concentrations of game and particularly large herds of elephant. The park is also noted for wild dogs. Access and accommodation tends to be quite expensive.

ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe is generally beyond the desert regions and has some green and fertile areas including large lakes and cool highlands. Cecil Rhodes' project of a railway from the Cape to Cairo was partially realised and still allows you to travel by train to Victoria Falls from Cape Town (or Harare) via Bulawayo either on ordinary trains or on special luxury trains such as Rovos Rail and The Blue Train.

Victoria Falls.

This is so well known it hardly needs introduction. As well as the colonial Victoria Falls Hotel there is now a wide range of accommodation and activities such as "The Flight of the Angels", cruises, wildlife watching on horseback, balloon rides and white water rafting but the main attraction will always remain the stunning spectacle of the falls themselves.

Hwange National Park.

This is Zimbabwe's largest park at 1.5 million hectares, surrounded by private reserves covering an even larger area. Noted for large numbers of elephant as well as other game and 400 species of bird. Game viewing on foot is permitted as well as in safari vehicles. There is a choice of traditional Game lodges or smaller lodges with tree houses, rondavels or tents. "Out of Africa" style luxury camping safaris can also be arranged. Accessible from Vic. Falls, Kariba and Harare any day of the year.

Kariba Lake.

The lake and Mana Pools below the dam provide locations for canoeing, houseboats and game viewing from boats. You can see elephants, buffalo, kudu and perhaps even lion. Access to the game lodges in this remote area is normally by plane but it is also possible by 4x4 vehicle.

Harare, Great Zimbabwe and the Eastern Highlands.

The capital Harare is in the east of the country and has many modern facilities. From Harare it is about half a days drive to the cool Eastern Highlands more reminiscent of Scotland than Africa. To the south is Great Zimbabwe, the most impressive ruins in sub-saharan Africa.

Bulawayo and vicinity.

Bulawayo is the main town in the west of the country, nearby is the Matobo (Matopos) National Park where Cecil Rhodes chose to be buried amongst the extraordinary balancing rock formations. Abundant wildlife including rhino, Bushmen rock paintings, Rhodes' grave at the View of the World, and tribal villages. Accessible by road or air via Bulawayo any day. On the edge of town is the Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage where you might get the chance to cuddle a cub!

SOUTH AFRICA

It is perhaps not surprising that South Africa is a curious blend of European and African influences. It has the largest and most westernised cities south of the Sahara and also vast open spaces.

The Cape & South Coast

The cool Cape wine region not only has the Dutch Style vineyard architecture but the weather to complete the impression of being in Europe. The cool currents from the south also create the green conditions of the "Garden Route" along the south coast. There is good walking along the coast and beaches. Dolphin and whalewatching is excellent during their Spring from the cliffs or even your hotel room.

Namaqualand and the West Coast

Also in their Spring you can see a spectacular burst of flowers after the rains in the deserts of the west and this makes a good combination with a stay on the south coast for whalewatching. The deserts of South Africa virtually join with the Kalahari in Botswana and the Namib and provide some sweeping landscapes as well as the Orange River canyons and unusual wildlife such as Meerkats and Gemsbok.

Durban Natal, Lesotho, Zululand & the Drakensbergs

Warm coastal waters around Durban frequented by Dolphins give way to the cooler mountainous interior. The Drakensberg Mountains between Johannesburg and Durban are particularly craggy and resemble a dragons back - hence their name.

Kruger, Swaziland and the East

Kruger National park is world famous for its game and the area is now almost as famous for the private reserves around the Park where you can stay in luxury lodges and trackers will almost guarantee to show you the "big five" in a short stay. The southern part is the warm fertile Lowveld and this is overlooked by the crags and canyons of the northern part such as the Blyde River Canyon.

Good roads and vehicles make self drive an attractive option in South Africa and all kinds of treks, rail journeys, safaris and exclusive game lodges can be arranged. The luxury of the Blue Train or the Rovos between Capetown and Pretoria or onward to Vic. Falls is world famous. A popular circuit from Jo'burg to Capetown includes Kruger, the Southeast coast, the Drakensburg highlands, the garden Route and the Cape.

The luxury Bush Camp features secluded chalets integrated discreetly into the dense valley landscape. All chalets are extremely private and have their own elevated balconies overlooking the perennial Sand River, Each room is large and luxurious with stunning vistas across the riverine bush and beyond. The unique en-suite bathroom and outdoor shower facility give you an uninterrupted view of hippo, elephant and other animals, which often graze peacefully below. Bush Camp has its own private lounge, balcony and boma, where evening meals are enjoyed under a clear, starlit African sky. The beautifully elevated swimming pool, set into the banks of the river, is surrounded by huge, hundred year old Ebony trees.

Tree Camp is the very best Londolozi has to offer. The central open plan lounge offers a spectacular view from every angle as delicious meals are served on a balcony, suspended 70 feet up in an ancient Ebony tree. Each Tree Camp chalet has an en-suite, shower and bath, including a private outdoor shower and cantilevered balcony. The camps swimming pool, built amongst natural rock formations, has a cascading waterfall which disappears over the edge of a ravine with a view of Africa beyond.

From palm savannah to montane bushveld, from delicate birds to the Big game, Phinda has it all. It is also acclaimed as South Africa's most responsible wildlife tourism project.

IN ZIMBABWE

MATETSI GAME LODGE

Occupying 50 000 hectares adjacent to the mighty Zambezi River, Matetsi represents a triumph for conservation, consolidating former hunting concessions into one of Africa's most magnificent game viewing sanctuaries. Just 40 kilometres west of Victoria Falls this is the home to vast herds of buffalo, elephant and sable as well as lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and many species of birds.

Matetsi Water Lodge overlooks the Zambezi River. The elegant air-conditioned suites are made of stone, teak and thatch whilst the decor is uniquely African.

The Matesti Safari Camp offers luxury under canvas. Set at the edge of an open grassland abounding with wildlife, this 24 bed camp under the stars sets new standards in tented elegance, complete with air-conditioning and modern conveniences.

NDUNA SAFARI LODGE

The intimate camp of Nduna Safari Lodge lies in the 40 000 hectare Lonestar Reserve in South Eastern Zimbabwe, bordering the Gonarezhou National Park. The six stone and thatch cottages are set amongst cathedral-like boulders alongside a shimmering lake. Game viewing from a canoe at dusk is an unforgettable experience. FLY IN SAFARIS

Fly-in safaris are available to many parts of the region. Because of the great distances and variable condition of the unpaved roads there are airstrips in most areas. OVERLAND CAMPING SAFARI

15 days Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, departs monthly. Maximum 5 people.

Here's your opportunity to discover the secrets of the wild as you travel with an experienced, qualified field guide through the untouched paradises of Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. This is for people who want to experience the diversity of Africa but do not have the time for a long journey or the money to stay in private lodges. With a maximum group size of 5 it is almost a private tour!!

Day 1: The Kalahari

With the aid of Bangwato tribe guides we leave Johannesburg to penetrate the depths of the Kalahari, advancing along the same route that the first missionaries took. Be prepared to be humbled by nature's ever-changing forces at work on the geographical features in Botswana. Relax around the campfire in a rhino sanctuary, savouring our first night in the bush.

Day 2: The Makgadikgadi Pans

Our first glance at the Makgadikgadi will fill us with awe. The world's largest salt pans lie spread out before us, stark yet enduring. In contrast to the flatness of the pans is the 30 metre high granite island in the centre. A walk on the island reveals the aura and mystique of this photographic wonder, whilst the centuries-old baobab trees which stud the island, tower majestically and proud overhead.

Days 3 and 4 : The Okavango Delta's Flood-plains

We enter the oasis that sustains vast herds of buffalo and elephant. The flood-plains of the delta beyond Maun are timeless and compelling. Spectacular sunsets silhouette the lllala palm trees on the islands. Take yourself close to the wildlife in the flood-plains, whilst on a game walk. At night, we share the rare experience of seeing shy, nocturnal animals like the civet the serval and the aardwolf, as we drive through their domain.

Days 5 &6 Western Delta

Synonymous with the delta is the mokoro, the wooden dugout canoe which is the traditional mode of transport in this land of water. We hitch a ride in one to increase our viewing of the bird, animal and plant life as we meander gently and silently through the water channels. Our mokoro will be steered effortlessly by a member of the Bayi tribe, who have perfected the art of poling with the aid of a ngashi.

Days 7 and 8: The Okavango Delta's "Panhandle"

The next stop is at a site beneath tall trees on the western side of the delta, from where we have an excellent opportunity to view the "Big Six" on any birder's list. Look out for the elusive Pel's Fishing Owl in particular.

Our next camp combines superb Botswana hospitality with a camping site that rates amongst the best in the country. As you treasure the peace, the silent Okavango River below the veranda will tempt you to experience it's magic. Fish for bream and tiger fish if you please. We could be fortunate enough to sight the African Skimmer and the Red-winged Pratincole, or glimpse that shy aquatic antelope, the Sitatunga. Perhaps a walk in one of the forests, amongst the grandeur of the trees, will be your choice instead.

Days 9, 10 and ll: Namibia's Caprivi Strip

We enter a new world, Namibia, with its majestic Sable Antelope and endangered Roan Antelope. The gentle giants of the bush, the elephants, may well take us by surprise before melting silently into the intermittent mopane woodland. At camp that night - on the banks of one of the oldest rivers in the region - listen to the sounds of the local wildlife, courtesy of the nocturnal animals, while around them all is at rest.

The Zambezi, our next overnight stop, is one of the largest rivers in Africa, This is the most northerly point of your tour, and introduces us to the Lozi tribe who extend up to central Zambia.

Day 12: Chobe

The Chobe river attracts large herds of elephant, buffalo and sable, accompanied by several predators, including the endangered Wild Dogs. This part of northern Botswana is a true wilderness of endless mopane woodland, offering ample opportunity to spot a large variety of game.

Be on your guard: our neighbours, the baboons, have perfected the art of the "take-away", without prior notice or orders. (Never feed them)

Day 13: Victoria Falls

The Falls, the destination of many explorers and hunters, exposes the force of the mighty Zambezi as it plunges 100m to the gorge below, creating the mist which gives it its local name - "Mosi Oa Tunya", the smoke that thunders.

At Victoria Falls the wide range of curios on sale gives one a bewildering array of choices, Your bargaining skills will be required to haggle in the market place.

Witness the natural wonder of the Falls and bring the day to a close with a sundowner cruise.

Day 14 Matobo

The gigantic boulders and massive rocks precariously stacked on one another are so impressive that you soon understand why Cecil Rhodes chose this site as his final resting place. Apart from it's grandeur, the Matobo offers a different habitat from that experienced earlier on the trip. Take note of the Miombo woodland as we travel

Day 15: Return

We travel in a Landrover Defender Tdi 300 air-conditioned 4WD vehicle .We spend 6 nights "roughing" in a bush camp (toilet and shower tents provided). The rest of the time is either in camp sites with good facilities with the last 2 nights in simple chalets. Meals are prepared for us but we will have to help set up camp. It's all part of the experience!
